Project objectives:

HP-SEE, High-Performance Computing Infrastructure for South East Europe’s Research Communities, will link existing and upcoming HPC facilities in South East Europe in a common infrastructure, and it will provide operational solutions for it. As a complementary action, the project will establish and maintain a GEANT link for Southern Caucasus.

The project objectives are:

·         Empowering multi-disciplinary Virtual Research Communities.

·         Deploying integrated infrastructure for Virtual Research Communities.

·         Policy development and stimulating regional inclusion in pan-European HPC trends.

·         Strengthening the regional and national human network.

High-Performance Computing Infrastructure for South East Europe’s Research Communities

Period: 01/09/2010 to 31/08/2013

Total cost: 3.900.463

Budget from EC: 2.100.000

Funding scheme: CP-CSA

ACTIVITIES

Networking activities “National and Regional HPC initiatives and international liaison” activity will provide support for organizational models on national and regional levels.

“Dissemination and training” activity will focus on outreach, both to the wider public as well as to specific HPC operator and existing and new user communities. “Virtual Research Communities support” is the central activity of the project which        will provide round-the-clock user support for a range of national and SEE-wide applications.

Service activities

“Regional HPC operations and interoperation” activity will ensure that integrated services will be provided to end users, by deploying the regional HPC infrastructure on top of the existing networking infrastructure, complementary to the existing Grid infrastructure, and fused with end-user services.

Procurement and network design will conduct the procurement of the connectivity elements between core points in south Caucasus region and the pan-European GEANT network PoP in South East Europe.

Network operations will ensure stable operation of the connections of South Caucasus National Research & Education Networks (NRENs) to the European Academic network GEANT3. Joint Research activities Software stack and technologies updates will support activities for analysis and integration of software stacks used, as well as permanent technology watch.

EXPECTED RESULTS AND OUTCOMES

The HP-SEE project goes beyond the current state-of-the-art and consolidates the process of regional eInfrastructure development and exploitation by deploying the regional HPC infrastructure, empowering the users and helping the region on the policy level, with the final result being the provision of fully integrated eInfrastructure services on the European level, including the SEE region as a peer. Furthermore, HP-SEE will enable HPC technology adoption in crucial strata of research communities in South- East Europe, especially in the context of the regional-level applications, thus creating a strong bond of researchers across borders and allowing co-ordination of high-quality research in target research fields which benefit from eInfrastructure use.
